Words hold immense power, as emphasized throughout Scripture. Proverbs 18:21 states, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (NIV). This powerful statement highlights the importance and impact of our words, particularly when considering our roles as disciples of Christ. We must use our words to spread His Good News and uplift and encourage others.

Lets look at what the Bible says about the importance of our words. Lets highlight the importance of such mindful language when we engage in missions to multiply disciples, especially in least-reached communities.

Global Disciples Canada is equipping local leaders to minister to least-reached communities. It demonstrates the power of life-giving words by training leaders to effectively share the gospel.

More than ever, the world needs disciples who understand the importance of using the power of the tongue for the glory of Christ and the edification of others.

1. The Biblical Significance of the Tongue

Throughout Scripture, the power and impact of spoken words are emphasized and illustrated in various passages. Let’s explore some key verses that highlight the importance of mindful language:

  • Proverbs 18:21: As previously mentioned, the central focus of our discussion is, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (NIV).
  • James 3:3-6: This passage uses the metaphor of a small bit in a horse’s mouth and a small rudder in a ship to underscore the significance of our words, emphasizing how the tongue controls the direction of the entire person.
  • James 3:9-10: Here, the inconsistency of blessing God and cursing others with the same mouth is addressed, showcasing the inherent contradiction in not carefully considering our words.

Understanding the biblical significance of the power of the tongue establishes a foundation on which we can build our communication and approach to spreading the gospel.

2. Developing Life-Giving Communication

To harness the power of the tongue and align our communication with biblical teachings, we must intentionally develop life-giving habits:

  • Encouragement and Edification: Exude positivity to those around you by offering encouragement and upliftment. Seek to build others up, specifically, in their faith and personal growth (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
  • Speak the Truth in Love: When sharing the truth, be it through teaching, correcting or sharing the gospel, convey it with love and gentleness (Ephesians 4:15).
  • Be Slow to Speak: Thoughtful communication is key. By taking the time to truly listen, you cultivate understanding and responsiveness to the Spirit (James 1:19).
  • Exercise Gracious Speech: Colossians 4:6 advises, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (NIV). Strive to speak words that unify, heal, and bring peace.

By honing life-giving communication, we align our words with God’s heart and positively impact those we encounter.

3. The Power of Your Words in the Mission Field

Our words carry significant influence in missions, especially when reaching least-reached communities. The potential impact of our words in ministry can be life-changing:

  • Sharing the Gospel: Proclaiming the Good News through culturally-sensitive and contextually-relevant language breaks through barriers and aids in reaching the hearts of unbelievers.
  • Strengthening Local Leaders: Thoughtful, gracious communication can empower and equip local leaders, boosting their confidence and effectiveness in disciple-making.
  • Building Relationships: Establishing trust and rapport with members of least-reached communities is essential. Mindful use of words fosters a welcoming atmosphere conducive to sharing the gospel.
  • Addressing Conflict: When conflicts arise in missional activities, using constructive words promotes understanding, resolution, and continued collaboration.

Utilizing the power of the tongue for good in the mission field amplifies the impact of our efforts to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations.
