Does the Old Testament still matter for Christians today? Discover how God’s Law, grace, and Jesus are all part of one story.

The Law and Grace: Does the Old Testament Still Matter?

Many Christians todayโ€”especially in a modern culture like ours in Canadaโ€”wonder if the Old Testament still matters.

โ€œArenโ€™t we under grace now?โ€
โ€œWasnโ€™t the law just a failed system before Jesus came?โ€

Itโ€™s an understandable question, but the answer is a big, hopeful yesโ€”the Old Testament still matters. Not just a little. A lot.

The Problem Isnโ€™t the Law. Itโ€™s How Weโ€™ve Read the Bible.

The confusion often comes from a misunderstanding of the Bibleโ€™s big picture. We sometimes treat the Old Testament Law like a failed first draft. We imagine that God gave the Law, hoping weโ€™d obey it and earn eternal life. When that didnโ€™t work (because of sin), He switched to Plan B: grace.

But thatโ€™s not how the Bible tells the story.

God doesnโ€™t do Plan Bs. The Law and the Gospel are not oppositesโ€”theyโ€™re deeply connected. The Law wasnโ€™t a trap; it was always pointing us to Jesus. If we ignore the Old Testament, we miss the Gospel Jesus Himself preached.

โ€œDonโ€™t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.โ€
โ€” Matthew 5:17 (NLT)

Jesus didnโ€™t cancel the Law. He completed it.

What Does โ€œThe Lawโ€ Really Mean?

When Jesus talks about the Law, Heโ€™s not just talking about rules or rituals. โ€œThe Law, the Prophets, and the Writingsโ€ was the full name of what we now call the Old Testament.

Sometimes โ€œlawโ€ means the commands (like the Ten Commandments), and sometimes it refers to the whole Old Testament story.

Hereโ€™s the key:

  • The ceremonial laws (like animal sacrifices) were fulfilled by Jesus.
  • The moral commandsโ€”how we love God and love othersโ€”still apply today.

Why Does the Old Testament Matter Today?

Here are three powerful reasons why Godโ€™s Law still mattersโ€”and how it all points to Jesus:

1. The Law Shows Us Whatโ€™s Right and Wrong

Godโ€™s law defines sin. Itโ€™s not just a list of โ€œdonโ€™tsโ€โ€”itโ€™s a portrait of what love looks like. When we read the commandments, weโ€™re seeing Godโ€™s heart for justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

But hereโ€™s the problem: on our own, we canโ€™t live up to it.

Thatโ€™s where Jesus comes in. He kept the Law perfectly, showing us what obedience looks likeโ€”and offering us His righteousness in our place.

2. The Old Testament Prepares Us for Jesus

From Adam to Abraham to Moses, every story and command in the Old Testament is part of Godโ€™s one plan of salvation.

Think of them as signposts pointing to Jesus.

โ€œFrom every text in Scripture there is a road to Christ.โ€ โ€” Charles Spurgeon

The whole Bible tells one unified story: creation, fall, promise, redemption. The Law shows our need, and Jesus shows Godโ€™s answer.

3. Jesus Gives Us Power to Obey

Before Jesus, the Law said โ€œDo this,โ€ but we were powerless to obey.

Now, through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, we can walk in obedienceโ€”not perfectly, but truly.

โ€œLove does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.โ€
โ€” Romans 13:10

Love is the heart of the Law, and Jesus empowers us to love as He loves.

What Happens When We Fall Short?

We will. We all do.

But thatโ€™s the beauty of grace: Jesus not only forgives our failureโ€”He gives us the Spirit to keep going.

โ€œGreat peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.โ€
โ€” Psalm 119:165

Our obedience doesn’t earn our salvationโ€”it flows from it.

Donโ€™t Be a Pharisee. Be Like Jesus.

The Pharisees knew the Law, but missed its meaning. They reduced it to behaviour they could manage, then advertised their own righteousness.

Jesus brought the Law back to its original purpose: loving God and others with all our heart.

He said:

โ€œYou have heard it said… but I tell you…โ€ โ€” Matthew 5

Jesusn wasnโ€™t making the Law easier. He was showing us how deep it really goesโ€”and that only He could fulfill it.

Jesus Didnโ€™t Just Teach the Lawโ€”He Fulfilled It

Jesus didnโ€™t come to give us a new religion. He came to:

  • Fulfill the requirements of the Law by living it out.
  • Die in our place, becoming the final sacrifice.
  • Give us the Holy Spirit, so we can now walk in obedience.

โ€œWith his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christโ€™s!โ€
โ€” Romans 8 (MSG)

Weโ€™re no longer facing the Law aloneโ€”weโ€™re facing it with Christ in us.

Final Thoughts: One Story, One Plan, One Saviour

God didnโ€™t have a Plan A and a Plan B. Heโ€™s always had one plan.
The Old Testament, the Law, and Grace are all part of the same story.

  • Jesus fulfilled the Law by living it perfectly.
  • He fulfilled the Law by making us new.
  • He fulfilled the Law by showing that loveโ€”not legalismโ€”is the goal.

So yes, Christianโ€”the Old Testament matters. It matters deeply.
Because Jesus is all over it.

Takeaway

Donโ€™t ask: โ€œIs the Old Testament relevant to my life today?โ€
Ask instead: โ€œHow is it relevant to my life today?โ€

Once you see Jesus in the Law, youโ€™ll never read the Bible the same way again.

Global Disciples Canada

Global Disciples Canada is a Christian mission organization that trains local leaders living near to reach least-reached communities to multiply disciples for Christ. One-third of our world hasnโ€™t heard the Good News of Jesus. Yet, Global Disciples refers to these as โ€œleast-reachedโ€ people and fewer than 10% of all missionaries work among these groups. We live in a time where many of these people are within reach of a local church. Through our simple and effective strategy of training and coaching, believers share the Gospel in their own nations and cultures. Jesus said, โ€œGo and make disciples of all nations,โ€ and weโ€™re committed to doing just that. If you are looking for a Christian mission organization to partner with to become a better disciple and help make disciples, connect with us today!
