Why We Are Not to Be Weary in Well Doing During Hard Times

January can feel especially heavy. The holiday rush has passed, the sky often stays grey, and the days are cold and quiet. On top of that, life’s challenges rarely take a break just because it is winter. They often linger: financial strain, loneliness, ministry setbacks, difficult relationships. In times like these, it is natural to feel worn out or even tempted to pull back from doing good. But Scripture gives us simple, honest direction in Galatians: be not weary in well doing.

Those words hold weight when it feels like you are doing your best and still not seeing much fruit. They remind us that doing what is right still matters, even when no one notices. As a new year starts, and as we move deeper into winter, we are invited to hold on with purpose and keep walking in faith.

What It Means to “Be Not Weary in Well Doing”

This phrase from Galatians 6:9 is not just a reminder to avoid burnout. It speaks to the deeper kind of tiredness, the kind that makes us question whether staying faithful is even worth it.

To be weary here means more than physical tiredness. It can mean feeling discouraged, frustrated, or unsure if continuing to serve or help others still has meaning. When that sense of weariness grows, it puts pressure on our willingness to do good.

And what qualifies as “well doing”? It is not only the big gestures or public acts. It includes small decisions to forgive, to show patience, to encourage someone else, or to continue sharing faith even when it feels awkward or hard. It is choosing every day to stay aligned with God’s purpose, no matter the season you are in.

Why Hard Times Challenge Our Will to Do Good

Hard seasons have a way of testing what we believe and how deeply we hold to it. It is one thing to serve, give, or lead when things are going well. But when prayers feel unanswered or when personal struggles stack high, our energy to stay kind or committed can drop fast.

• We might feel overlooked, like we are doing good unseen, unvalued, and unrewarded.

• We may face slow progress, especially in ministry or personal growth, and wonder if anything is really changing.

• Emotional and spiritual fatigue can lead us to protect ourselves instead of staying open to others.

That is where many of us start backing away from the work we have been called to. Not quitting publicly, but quietly stepping back. Avoiding conversations, skipping things we once loved, and putting our guard up instead of reaching out. But these are the very moments when staying steady matters most.

Staying Faithful When Progress Feels Slow

God rarely hands us finished work. Instead, He gives us opportunities to plant seeds, to speak words of hope, act with love, and hold steady in prayer. Yet after we have done this for a while without seeing results, we can start to doubt it is worth it.

That is when we need to remember that His timing is not ours. We may not see a breakthrough in the season we hoped for. Still, something is happening under the surface.

• A smile shared in frustration may soften someone’s heart later.

• A prayer repeated many times may open a door just when it is most needed.

• A steady hand in ministry may raise others to continue long after we have stepped back.

Looking for signs of fruit does not mean chasing big moments. It often means noticing peace in a conversation that would have turned angry or watching someone try again after failure. Little things become signs that seeds are growing, even in winter.

How to Find Strength for the Long Walk

We are not alone in the feeling of being worn down. And we do not have to keep going in our own strength. There are practical, spiritual ways to recharge, ways that remind us we are not walking without help.

1. Read Scripture often, not just to study but to sit with truth that anchors.

2. Pray simply. Not every prayer needs to be long. Some days, we just need to tell God honestly how we feel.

3. Take rest seriously. We were not made to run at full speed forever.

4. Surround ourselves with people who bring life, those who do not drain but restore.

5. Worship, even when we do not feel like it. Worship shifts our focus from results to relationship.

Sometimes, hearing how someone else made it through helps more than advice. Letting the testimony of another person’s faith bring light can refocus us when all we see is fog. Moments when it feels like we have run out of energy, realizing others have also stood in that same place, can renew our willingness to try again.

Encouraging Others Who Feel Worn Down

It is not just about us fighting to keep going. We are called to help others do the same. Encouraging someone else does not require a title or platform, just presence and kindness.

• Check in with someone who might be discouraged. A short message can make a big difference.

• Share a Scripture that encouraged you. Pass it along without pressure, just as a gift.

• Pray with someone, not just for them. Even if it is brief and quiet, praying together reminds us we are not alone.

When we carry the weight together, we often find that ours feels lighter too. Hard times feel less hard when someone else is beside us. We each have a part in building endurance, lending a hand or a kind word, so no one feels left to stand alone.

Good Work That Lasts Beyond the Season

Winter does not last. And neither does weariness. The work we do now, with love and perseverance, will spring up later in ways we do not expect.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us that we will reap in due season if we do not give up. That is not just about reward. It is about impact. When we keep doing good through hard times, others watch. They see real faith alive in real life.

Sharing the hope of Jesus is tiring sometimes. Especially when it takes time or feels like it is falling on hard ground. But when we keep showing up, loving well, and praying faithfully, we are not just doing good, we are changing futures. Consistent kindness has a way of taking root, sometimes in places we will never see, and the results can go far beyond what we ever expected in this season.

One third of our world has not heard the Good News of Jesus. Global Disciples refers to these as “least-reached” people, and fewer than 10% of all missionaries work among these groups. Many of these people are within reach of a local church. Through our simple and effective strategy of training and coaching, believers share the Gospel in their own nations and cultures. Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations,” and we are committed to doing just that. If you are looking for a Christian mission organization to partner with to become a better disciple and help make disciples, connect with us today!

Endurance That Impacts Eternity

When discouragement creeps in and progress feels slow, we are reminded that this calling is not measured by what we see right away. At Global Disciples Canada, we hold fast to the truth that God works through faithfulness, even when the results are hidden. The call to be not weary in well doing is more than a verse, it is an invitation to trust that what we sow will matter. Whether you are serving locally or reaching the least-reached, your endurance carries weight. Ready to take another step in walking this out alongside us? We would love to hear from you.
